Realization. It’s something that could be perceived in either a positive or a negative light, depending ultimately on the outcome of the event itself. You’re still currently deciding which category realizing that you’re a vampire fits into. Fortunately, you were the type of person to move on and make the best of your situation despite all hardships. Dealing with vampirism was harder than it seemed. At first the fact that you had grown a pair of impressive fangs and the thirst for blood aching in your throat struck you as comical.
Funnily enough, that wasn’t the only thing that harbored your realization. One ordinary day, you happened to stumble upon a boy- bruises and cuts finding home all over his body. For a moment the shock had gotten the better of you and it was only when his labored breaths reached your sensitive ears did you go into freak-out mode. You hadn’t seen a human in quite a while, much less a boy. The compassionate part in you wanted to help the boy, knowing that if you left him here he would surely die. But the sensible half of you knew that if you tended to him, it could be very dangerous. Humans and vampires were not meant to mix. It was the only rule that had to be abided by.
Alas, the more caring side of you triumphed over the other and you decided to heal him up until he was at least well enough to fend for himself. That was acceptable. Right? Half-carrying him back to your little cottage you had lived in ever since you had found it abandoned, your role turned into one of a nurse as you cleaned his wounds and bandaged it up. The whole while his blood was tempting you as you fought to keep it down. It just wasn’t right for you to drink a human’s blood while you were one yourself just a few years ago.
A few weeks after the incident, you came home to find the boy awake and sitting silently at the table. As you entered his eyes traveled to your own and they widened slightly. This was the first time you had seen his eyes, and they were a lovely shade of navy blue. Coughing slightly to relieve yourself of the awkward way you were staring at each other you started with a, “H-Hello, I’m [Name]. I saved you the other day…you are…?”
He didn’t reply immediately, still in his reclusive manner. It was a while before he replied, “I’m Lukas, and I am truly grateful…thank you.”
Nodding, you quickly added, “Don’t worry about it… You should stay awhile! A-After all you only just woke up and it wouldn’t be safe for travel and all…”
You could have slapped yourself. Was your tone of voice a little too eager? Besides, it was only better for him to leave as soon as possible- even you had promised yourself that!
“I appreciate your kindness. I’ll try to leave as soon as I’m feeling better as to not cause you too much trouble.”
“I-It’s nothing really. It would be nice to have another person’s company…”
Stop talking [Name]. Stop it before you get yourself in deeper trouble!
He replies with an inquisitive stare and looks down while he mutters a quiet, “Alright then.”
The days following his awakening were…interesting ones to say the least. At first he was very quiet and mysterious, only requesting to help you out once in a while and exploring. He become more open to you though after you tried to offer a certain degree of friendship. While you chatted with him on loose topics, a small voice in the back of your head always warned you to make sure he doesn’t find out what you really were.
Then it came. That dreaded question you never wanted to hear.
“[Name], are you a vampire?”
The question nearly made you drop the book you were reading. Your heart was racing a mile a minute, eyes widened in surprise and you didn’t want to meet is gaze no matter what. This was it. He was going to run away and never look back once he found out the truth.
“Haha…that’s really funny Lukas-“
“I’m not joking. You are…aren’t you?” he replied, this time you risked a glance towards his dull blue eyes. Bad move.
“Y-Yes. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier…it was just that I was afraid I would lose our friendship,” you confessed, wishing with all of your heart that he would still accept you even though the chances were slim to none.
This time, the silence was heavy and tangible. Every second that past felt like an hour and it made the weight on your shoulders feel greater and greater.
“I’m glad you told me [Name]. Don’t worry, I won’t judge you,” he gives you a small smile, hoping that it might somehow reassure you that he wasn’t angry or afraid or even remotely disgusted.
That made you realize just what a great person he was.
Following that, feelings began to bloom. You took notice of things that you had tried not to notice in the past. The way his eyes reminded you of the deepest mix of blue and purple, how his light blonde hair waved in the wind, his stature that made you recognize instantly that it was him…everything.
It was your little secret. How cliché…forbidden love. He would never know, you wouldn’t let it and you couldn’t dare tell him or even hint at it.
Then came the kiss. It took place just outside your cottage as the two of you settled on the ground looking up at the sky and the clouds. You were joking about what shapes and forms the clouds resembled and when you turned to look for his agreement it happened. At that small moment, you realized something else. Rules and boundaries…none of that mattered to you actually. It was time to face it head-on, and accept your feelings.
Reaching for his hand, you laced your fingers with his.
